| Sarlat-la-Médiévale
Situated
only 10 kms (6 miles) from the Combas Holiday Village,
Sarlat-la-Médiévale is one of the most
delightful historic towns in France. The houses, roofed
with stone slabs and slates, rise to slender gables
and boast ornate stone dormer windows and Gothic doorways.
There are shops beneath arcades and buildings with corner
turrets. Together they create a sumptuous decor filled
with the hustle and bustle of visitors to craft workshops
and other retail outlets.
Sarlat
is the main town in the area known as "Dark Périgord".
It becomes even busier on Saturdays when it is filled
with the cries of its market, an event as colourful
and redolent with wonderful aromas as anything Gargantua
could dream of. Day-old chicks, poultry, fruit, piglets,
walnuts, foie gras and truffles reign supreme as one
month follows another. The town is also famous for its
festivals, a film festival in autumn and a drama festival
in summer. Whatever the time of year, Sarlat has cultural
entertainment to share.
